Cancer

The diagnosis of cancer is overwhelming to say the least and it can be confusing sorting through the different treatment options available.

The best approach following any cancer diagnosis is to start with integrative care from day one. Often times, patients will resort to the most aggressive treatment protocol out of fear. Then, after conventional options are exhausted, patients often look towards integrative care. By using an integrative approach, much of the suffering could have been managed.

Both the aggressive treatments and the disease process itself can take a huge toll on the body. Under the supervision of a naturopathic physician, many patients will go through chemotherapy and radiation with minimal side effects. You must have professional guidance from a physician who is knowledgeable in the interactions of drugs, botanicals, and nutrients using their specific role in cancer therapies.

With a passion for women’s medicine, Dr. Shell became concerned by the prevalence of cancer in the personal and family history of her patients. Another positive influence, was the close mentorship that she continues to receive from older brother, Dr. Adam McLeod, ND, world renowned energy healer and best-selling author (x5) who works solely with oncology patients at his practice in Vancouver, BC.

Throughout medical school, Dr. Shell elected to complete over 300 hours of clinical rotations focused on integrative oncology. She continues to develop comprehensive integrative treatment plans at her practice in Chandler, AZ. Whether you are looking to safely integrate natural therapies into your cancer treatment, prevent recurrence, or optimize your health— you will be guided every step of the way.

Gut Health

Do one or more of these symptoms sound familiar?

  • Are you bloated?
  • Do you have allergies or food sensitivities?
  • Do you have diarrhea or constipation?
  • Are you tired all the time?
  • Do you have acne?
  • Do you get sick often and/or recover slowly?

Gut health is so important during anytime of your life. Even in the absence of digestive symptoms, many seemingly unrelated disorders can be traced back to poor gut health such as a hormonal imbalance, acne, allergies, autoimmune disease, joint aches and pains, weight loss resistance and almost any inflammatory condition.

Leaky-gut syndrome is a common finding, particularly in patients with a history of allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, or autoimmune disease. The cells lining the intestinal tract can become damaged allowing substances to “leak” through the gut and enter the bloodstream. This can result in chronic inflammation causing a myriad of symptoms including fatigue, bloating, weight gain, muscle pain, arthritis and a weakened immune system.

There are many factors that can contribute to poor gut health, some of which may seem obvious such as an unhealthy diet. What you aren’t always aware of is that your body may be reacting to those fresh, organic blueberries that you eat for breakfast every morning or the cage-free egg whites that you pack for lunch. Often times the foods that are causing your sore joints, fatigue or headaches are ones that you may have never suspected. A specialty blood test performed in office will detect foods in your diet that may be leaking into your blood stream, unknowingly wrecking havoc on your body.

A healthy gut helps to manage whole-body inflammation and ensures optimal bio-absorption of nutrients. Healing and supporting the gut involves eating the right foods, eliminating food sensitivities, daily probiotics, taking the right antimicrobials and targeted supplementation such as glutamine or zinc. Once repaired, you may find that all other health problems will miraculously disappear. Gut health is tightly interconnected to the optimal functioning of every organ system and it is a foundational pillar to our health.

Low Testosterone

Do one or more of these symptoms sound familiar?

  • Are you tired and achy all the time?
  • Are you irritable?
  • Are you losing muscle and gaining belly fat?
  • Do you have a lack of motivation?

… You may have low testosterone!

As we age, our bodies produce less than adequate amounts of hormones. Perhaps what is most surprising is that the symptoms of low hormone production are increasingly common for men and women as early as their mid-30’s.  After age 30, people will start to feel a change in their body and a general decrease in motivation. More symptoms of low testosterone include decreased energy, trouble sleeping, weight gain around the abdomen, loss of muscle mass, brain fog or anxiety.

It is a common misconception that you must have a low libido to have low testosterone and that is not always the case. In fact, most men will notice changes in their body far before their libido is affected. Another misconception is that testosterone is only for men. Testosterone deficiency in women is extremely common and may cause fatigue, slow recovery time, low muscle tone, weight gain and low libido. A few blood tests will tell us if your testosterone and other hormones need to be balanced. Testosterone replacement can be a life-changing therapy if you suffer from a deficiency or suboptimal levels. Hormone management is so important for the enjoyment of life and for the prevention of many prevalent diseases such as osteoporosis, diabetes and cardiovascular issues.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, treatment may require a combination of laboratory testing, lifestyle changes, gut health optimization, botanical support or hormone replacement therapy. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (bHRT) is a convenient, safe and effective therapy when prescribed by an experienced physician. It is a simple way to replace low levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone for men and women. Book an appointment with Dr. Shell if you suspect that you have a hormone imbalance. You deserve to have the energy and health to live your life the way you choose.

Do one or more of these symptoms sound familiar?

• Are you tired and achy all the time?
• Are you moody?
• Do you have trouble sleeping, low libido, or brain fog?
• Do you have a lack of motivation?
• Do you want to feel like yourself again?

Menopause, and for several years leading up to it, also known as perimenopause, can be a time of great confusion and distress. When our hormone levels decline, it can feel like you are falling apart.

The most common signs and symptoms of menopause are:

• Hot flashes
• Trouble sleeping
• Night sweats
• Weight gain
• Fatigue
• Low libido
• Vaginal dryness
• Anxiety
• Increased urinary tract infections
• Brain fog
• Muscle aches

Throughout all stages of life but especially during menopause, hormone health optimization is so important for weight management, enjoyment of life and for the prevention of many prevalent diseases such as osteoporosis, diabetes or cardiovascular issues.

For some women, little to no treatment is needed and they just want to understand their body and the changes that are happening. For others, this can be a very difficult time and may require a combination of laboratory testing, lifestyle changes, gut health optimization, botanical support or hormone replacement therapy.

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (bHRT) is a convenient, safe and effective therapy when prescribed by an experienced physician. It is a simple way to replace low levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone for men and women. Consult Dr. Shell if you suspect that you have a hormone imbalance. You deserve to have the energy and health to live your life the way you choose.

Menstrual Issues

Do one or more of these situations sound familiar?

• PMS?
• Irregular cycle?
• Painful cramping?
• Heavy bleeding?
• Side effects from the pill?

Menstrual cramps, pain and PMS symptoms affect the majority of women in the US. In fact, a symptom-free menstrual cycle is shockingly unfamiliar but it doesn’t have to be that way.

It is common practice to prescribe birth control for the relief of menstrual-related symptoms, often times before investigating the cause. This is a scary practice when conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, cysts and infertility are so common. If you suffer from menstrual irregularities, it is important to contact your naturopathic doctor and take control of your health today.

A simple blood test will tell us if your hormones need to be balanced and a full work-up will be performed to rule out more serious conditions. Migraines, weight gain, irregular menses, painful cramping, irritability, depression—all of these symptoms are frequently associated with hormone imbalance. Hormones can be naturally managed, fully restored and optimized with lifestyle, diet, and the right combination of botanical/nutritional supplements.

After a thorough discussion of natural and conventional options, a hormonal contraceptive may be the most preferred and appropriate method of treatment. In these cases, Dr. Shell will prescribe according to your symptoms and medical history. Our focus will then shift towards supportive care to prevent common nutrient deficiencies, weight gain, fatigue, depression or infertility that may occur while on the birth control pill or other treatment that you start.

Whether you are currently on the pill, wanting to come off the pill or interested in starting the pill, Dr. Shell provides counseling for the different options available and comprehensive supportive care at any stage so that you can preserve your fertility (if desired) and enjoy life!

Thyroid Issues

Stacks Image 104

Do one or more of these symptoms sound familiar?

  • Are you tired all the time?
  • Is it difficult to lose weight?
  • Are you always cold?
  • Do you feel sad or depressed?
  • Are you forgetful?
  • Do you feel bloated?

The thyroid is a small gland in your neck and when it isn’t functioning like it should, everything slows down. You feel sluggish, tired and it may be difficult to lose weight or to even think clearly. The American Thyroid Association reports that up to 60 percent of people with a thyroid dysfunction don’t even know that they have a problem.

Thyroid hormones are important for every cell in your body. Their primary role is to control metabolism or the way your body uses energy. An underactive thyroid gland is when your thyroid isn’t making enough hormones to supply your body and your metabolism starts to slow down. This causes weight gain, fatigue, depression, bloating, muscle aches, brain fog, and the list goes on. Even when you present with symptoms, many doctors will fail to order the correct tests and misdiagnose the condition-- particularly for men, and especially for women under 40.

A large number of hypothyroid cases are due to autoimmunity. Hashimoto’s disease is a common autoimmune condition, which involves an immune system attack on the thyroid. This causes low thyroid hormone production in addition to chronic inflammation and can become a very serious condition if not managed correctly. A less common condition is a hyperactive thyroid gland, which occurs when the thyroid is making too much hormone. The result is an increase in metabolism and may cause diarrhea, sweating, a racing heartbeat, or insomnia.

Thyroid dysfunction is highly under-diagnosed and if left untreated, it will increase a person's risk for heart disease, stroke, infertility, osteoporosis and pregnancy-related complications. Consult with Dr. Shell if you suspect that you have a thyroid disorder. There are extraordinary health benefits that can be achieved when we focus in all areas affecting your health such as: diet, lifestyle, targeted nutrient/botanical therapy, treatment of coexisting illness, and pharmaceuticals, when appropriate.

Optimizing thyroid health is essential to your well-being and enjoyment of life. Book an appointment today to keep your thyroid in peak condition.
